MEISSNER was established in 1926 as a partnership company by Josef Meissner, an entrepreneur with many innovative ideas. The company's first process, today well known as the "SCHMID-MEISSNER Process", was developed for the continuous manufacture of Nitroglycerine. Combining outstanding features such as improved safety, constant product quality, and utmost reliability, the concept of continuous Nitroglycerine production marked a milestone in chemical technology.

The initial momentum was maintained throughout the further development of the company. A team of capable chemists and engineers extended the know-how step by step to develop new processes in the explosives field, and later on also for the manufacture of starting materials and chemical intermediates for explosives and related chemicals.

In succession to the founder Josef Meissner, his sons Heribert Meissner as engineer and Dr. Fritz Meissner as graduate chemist took over the management of the company and pursued a further successful development of the technological know-how, which resulted in a number of patented processes.

In 1964, MEISSNER was re-established as a limited partnership company. Up to this day, the company shares remain in the family's possession, now in the third generation. Today JOSEF MEISSNER GmbH & Co. KG is managed by Dr. Rolf Meissner (shareholder and managing director) together with Dr. Paul Schleicher (managing director).

The highly trained and committed MEISSNER team of about 65 permanent employees involves older and younger people working side by side to cope with the manifold tasks ensuing from the research and development in the company's own laboratories, the plant engineering in the technical department, and the commercial handling of the procurement and shipping of equipment. By additional employment of freelance task force teams, MEISSNER is able to respond very flexibly to the special requirements arising during the execution of large-scale projects with extremely tight time schedules.
